3 Uncommon Strategies for Managing Stress
There are many articles, books and online videos that discuss ways we can manage stress in our lives. However, there are some very effective strategies that are often unmentioned. Here are 3 uncommon strategies for managing stress that many people we work with say they find helpful:
1. Being in Nature
Ask most people, and they will say that being in nature is rejuvenating, nourishing and peaceful. If you find yourself experiencing stress, taking the time to go outdoors can do wonders. We often forget this, particularly those of us living in cities and urban areas or who find themselves living a fast paced life. Research local walks in your area, go outside on your lunch break, stroll through your backyard if you have one or visit a local park. Sometimes just 15 to 30 minutes outside a day can help reduce symptoms of stress dramatically.
2. Generosity
When we are stressed, we are often more self focused. This is because we are often experiencing symptoms that are quite noticeable, or we are distracted or overwhelmed with how much we have to get done. Take the time to do a generous act. This is not just rewarding, but also researched as an immediate and effective way to feel happy. Generosity can come in many forms, whether it be giving someone spare change, sending a gratitude text, writing someone a thank-you card, paying someone a compliment or even doing something nice for yourself.
3. Forgiveness
It is incredible just how much time we can spend brooding on a past hurt or thinking about someone who has done us wrong in some way. When we spend all our energy coming up with ways to tell someone off, try to explain to them what they have done wrong or even plan revenge, we are spending a lot of energy on negativity and hatred. This can be very draining, and narrow our lives down to preoccupations and fixations rather than what is important or what we value. Whist forgiveness is a deeply personal process that takes time, it can ultimately lead to a happier and more stress-free life.
